Kerala genuinely got famous in the Hyderabad even to minorities. Hyderabadi people are so adventurous and exuberant, their quest for nature have got consummated at the places in Kerala. Currently, The forest and its magnetizations are just a minute one but not most sought except the ones who have already visited the place. The forest comes in the vicinity of Thalassery village of Kannur district in Chittariparamba panchayat. The peregrination to the forest is quite riveting one, as both the sides of roads are covered immensely with colossal trees ascertaining a congenial shade along the ride. On entering further deep into the forest, the concreted roads start evanescent and you will gradually enter into mud paved roads. If exploring in full you may get surprised to visually perceive the wealthiness of this jungle. We can go on a tour to the inner areas of this jungle starting with its scenic deep obnubilate waterfall.
Deeply hidden cascade beauty, Areekkayam Manikoondu
Park the vehicle and ambulate gradually into the inner skirts of the jungle and manage to walk through the forest path that can be utilized by one person at a time. There you can listen to the gushing sound of the waterfall that is striking against huge boulders. Feel the chillness of the water and try to take a dip. The locals have an interesting story to share regarding the waterfall and the pool. Myths were verbally expressed in archaic times and that was heavenly fairies have used to visit Kerala and descended to take a dip in the cool waterfall in Kannur forest and that point they used to throw rice to the pool and hence, the name Areekkayam. This story is a just myth revolving in nearby places and people who believe stories frequent the cascade and will take a dip. It is adorable to behold the beauty of the waterfall, maybe that is the reason why even Heavenly fairies have descended to earth. If Government takes enough steps to promote its tourism aspects then this place will promise to be a tourism splendour. On moving further, we can explore a tribal village named Kolappan colony, more stories are waiting there.
Kolappan Colony, the descendants of a Warrior
It was quite easy for the guide leading Hyderabadi tourists to narrate the story of Kolappan colony as there were familiar with the name, Pazhassi Raja who was a valiant prince to fought first against the British regime. In fact, Kannavam forest was an arena for his wars supported by tribal clans having a genealogy of Kurichiyas headed by Thalakkal Chandu. Thalakkal Chandu was the army chief of Pazhassi battalion. He fought fearlessly with the prince and still now, the blood of this great warrior can be seen in Kolappan colony. Some of the Hyderabadi natives have watched the movie, Pazhassi Raja released in Malayalam starring Superstar Mammootty. They suddenly understood the character as it was portrayed in the movie. For them, the affordable Kerala tourism was an amazement as everywhere they go, where they can find the blend of history and elegance. Kerala is a place that can impart a basic knowledge of the colonial era and some interesting myths too. What awaited them next was something divine.
Velumbtah Makham, a historical prodigy showering divinity
The middle part of the Kannavam forest houses a famous mosque, Velambath Makham. Hyderabadi Muslim tourists were eager to know the story behind this mosque and the annual celebration conducted here. Glad are those who came here to offer their prayers for having a child and curing diseases. Amidst the thick forest, years ago, people while passing Thalassery to Mananthavady used to enter the mosque and offer prayers, There were no provisions to reach Mananthavady then. During the colonial period, in 1815, Britishers have built a bridge over the Kannavam river to reach the town. People residing in the forest have started their relocation since the presence of bridge was available for them. Slowly, the Mosque was abandoned and started to decay since no devotees visited. After years, supernatural occurrences started occurring in the mosque premises and the graveyard. It was then the people got alert and soon, Velambath Makham became famous. Saints were brought to do some procedures and after which the mosque regained its popularity. Now, thousands of people arrive here and offer prayers. An annual celebration is conducted here lasting for five days. Pilgrims and believers used to take part in the celebration.
How can these much attractions be stuffed in a forest? Kannavam forest is the pride of Kannur and Kerala tourism striving hard to promote its potential. A number of tours and trekking have been experienced here after the relinquishment of the magnum opus, Bahubali. This is the reason why Hyderabadi tourists too visited Kerala and got astonished by its beauty.
